Asphalt shingle roofs are the most common and most cost effective roof choice for Californians.
Asphalt shingles come in a variety of colors and looks. Asphalt shingles are commonly referred to as “comp” roofs or “shingle” roofs.
On existing roofs, it is common practice to remove the existing roof before installing the new shingles, however it is allowable to install a second layer directly on top of the existing layer.
Comp roofs are cost effective and durable with a lifespan of around 20-30 years in California which makes them the most common choice of roof in California.

Advantages of shingle or comp roofs are that they are cost effective. They range in a variety of colors to suit the needs of your preferred aesthetic and are readily available products.
Shingle roofs are the most common roof type in California which means your house will not stand out compared to a Standing seam metal roof or Tesla SolarRoof. Shingle roofs are not the most durable roofing option since they are subject to damage in high winds. They are also subject to mold and mildew and are not the most energy efficient option relative to other roof choices.
Wicks installs shingle roofs with removal at around $7-$9 per square foot.
Composition shingle roofs are made of fiberglass, asphalt and other composite materials. They are called “Comp” roofs as a shortened version for the name of composition shingles. In the past, these roofs were made of asphalt which is why they are also called “asphalt shingle” roofs.
The current code allows for no more than 2 layers of shingles on an existing building before the layers must be removed. We recommend that you remove the existing layers regardless so you can review the condition of the wood deck and replace the wood rot as needed.
